The strange within the real: the function of fantasy in Austen, Bronte and Eliot

This study of selected works by three British novelists of the nineteenth century, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronté and George Eliot, focusses on the relationship between realism and the fantastic. The analysis is particularly concerned with the various ways in which a secret or oblique fantastic discourse disturbs the "realism" which, according to critical tradition, constitutes the main stylistic feature of these writers. In this way the status of realism itself is questioned, as the narrative discloses those subterranean spaces which are its hidden underworld.

Il testo affronta la problematica inerente al rapporto tra il realistico e il fantastico in tre narratrici inglesi dell'800, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronté e George Eliot. L'analisi è volta in particolare a cogliere le varie modalità testuali con cui il discorso fantastico, più o meno segreto e ellittico, interferisce nel registro realistico che, secondo la tradizione critica, caratterizzerebbe fino in fondo la scrittura di queste autrici. Viene così messo in discussione lo statuto del realismo man mano che la narrazione rivela i sottofondi immaginari che ne costituiscono la cifra occulta.
