La Resurrezione dei Santi

Il teatro è un’arte di piccoli miracoli. Uno di questi si materializza ogni volta che la “Religione Trionfante” è rappresentata nella piccola città di collina di Venafro (Italia) dove gli abitanti lo hanno custodito come forma vivente di Teatro Sacro attraverso il quale esprimere tutta la loro devozione ai Santi Patroni, che rappresentano il cuore dell’identità del paese. Scritto nel 1792 da Giuseppe Macchia “La religione trionfante nel Martirio dei Santi Nicandro, Marciano, e Daria” è il trionfo della teatralità. Lo spettacolo è poco conosciuto al di fuori di Venafro, ma è ricco di elementi del grande teatro: conflitti epici, ingiustizia tragica, personaggi avvincenti, interventi soprannaturali, comicità provocatoria, strazianti separazioni familiari, follia, tirannia, decapitazioni, rivoluzione politica e resurrezione spirituale. Questi elementi si intrecciano tra loro in una complessa struttura che richiama le classiche tradizioni teatrali del passato, dall’antico dramma greco ai medievali drammi del mistero, alla commedia dell’arte italiana e ai capolavori moderni del Premio Nobel Dario Fo. Il seguente volume contiene il testo della tragicommedia sacra del Macchia insieme alle testimonianze dei cittadini di Venafro che hanno interpretato il dramma per secoli contribuendo a mantenere viva la memoria dei loro Santi.Theater is an art of small miracles. One of these small miracles takes place whenever “Religion Triumphant” is staged in the tiny mountain town of Venafro, Italy, where the citizens have preserved it as a living form of sacred theater to express their devotion to the Patron Saints that are at the heart of the town’s identity.Written in 1792 by Giuseppe Macchia “Religion Triumphant in the Martyrdom of Saints Nicandro, Marciano, and Daria” is a triumph of theatricality. The play is little known outside Venafro, but it is packed with elements of great theater: epic conflicts, tragic injustice, compelling characters, supernatural interventions, provocative comedy, heartbreaking family separations, madness, tyranny, beheadings, political revolution, and spiritual resurrection. These elements are woven together in a complex structure that recalls the classic theater traditions of the past from Ancient Greek Drama and Medieval Mystery plays to Italian Commedia Dell’Arte and the modern masterpieces of the Nobel Laureate Dario Fo. This book includes the text of Macchia’s “sacred tragicomedy” along with the testimony of the citizens of Venafro who have performed the text for centuries to help keep the memory of their Saints alive. Professore di teatro all’Università di Wesleyan e professore esterno alla Yale Divinity School. Jenkins è autore di numerosi libri ed è stato nominato Socio Onorario della Dante Society di America per aver svolto rappresentazioni teatrali di brani tratti dalla “Divina Commedia” di Dante nelle prigioni di tutta Italia, Indonesia e Stati Uniti. Ron Jenkins, a recipient of Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships, has directed and/or translated the plays of Dario Fo and Franca Rame at Harvard’s American Repertory Theater and other venues throughout North America. A Professor of Theater at Wesleyan University and a frequent Visiting Professor at the Yale Divinity School, Jenkins is the author of numerous books and has been named an Honorary Fellow of the Dante Society of America in recognition of his work staging excerpts from Dante’s “Divine Comedy” in prisons throughout Italy, Indonesia, and the United States. Maria Giusti, laureata in Lingue e Letterature straniere, esperta in Marketing e Turismo. Poetessa premiata in diversi Concorsi Letterari e pubblicata su diverse Antologie poetiche. Giusti è autrice di numerose sillogi, ultima delle quali “Assenzio”. La sua opera precedente “E se così fosse”, poema breve scritto per il teatro, ha ricevuto premi e riconoscimenti, ultimo dei quali dalla Società Dante Alighieri di La Spezia che al Premio il “Sigillo di Dante”, edizione 2019, le ha conferito “Il Premio Lunigiana”. Maria Giusti holds degrees in Foreign Languages and Literatures and is an expert in marketing and tourism. As a poetess she has been awarded numerous literary prizes and has been published in diverse Poetry anthologies. Giusti is the author of numerous works, most recently “Wormwood.” Her previous book, “And if it Were,” brief poems written for the theater, received received multiple prizes, including the “Il Premio Lunigiana” of the 2019 “Sigillo di Dante” conferred by the Dante Alighieri Society of La Spezia.
